Timi O’Neill, Programme Director of the Professional Doctorate in Art and Design at UWTSD Swansea College of Art, has been appointed an Expert of the Silk Road Education League of International Digital Video and Photographic Art Education.

A room-sized screen with Chinese text and English text introducing Timi O Neill; audience members look on while a man speaks at a lectern at the side of the screen.

The appointment, following a successful two-week immersive storytelling workshop for students at the prestigious Xi’an Academy of Fine Art (XAFA) in China, alongside five academic practitioners from Serbia, the UK, Egypt, Italian and USA, was made in recognition of his expertise and significant contribution and is a testament to his commitment to promoting the integration of art and technology in education and his ability to inspire students to explore new forms of artistic expression.

Timi’s workshop, titled “Immersive Storytelling”, aimed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to showcase their creative narratives through digital media platforms. Utilising their newfound skills, the students curated a captivating multi-screen immersive exhibition entitled ‘Residuum: Xi’an’.

This spatial film practice, offered a unique and intimate cinematic view of the city to promote the city from perspectives that are uncommon to outsiders, shedding light on lesser-known aspects of its rich history and vibrant culture. This innovative approach to storytelling allowed students to immerse viewers in the heart of Xi’an, providing a new perspective on the city.

Alongside the students work, Timi exhibited his own AI photographic work entitled ‘What remains? An auto ethnographic photo diary of Paris.’ The work explores Timi’s attempts to co-create memories with AI.

As part of the event, Timi delivered a lecture on Unlocking Creativity: Al and Immersive Technology in the Creative Industries as part of the ‘Craftwork, 8th International Arts Academy Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts’.

Timi said: “I am extremely proud of the success of the ‘Residuum: Xi’an’ exhibition and the innovative work produced by XAFA students. Their creativity was at times, unreal. The future of Chinese art and design is in safe hands. The University looks forward to continued collaboration with XAFA and their students in the future. We hope to continue to foster a cross cultural, creative, transformative learning environment.”

Professional Doctorate in Art and Design promotes practice-based research that integrates new ways of thinking with new technologies in art, design, and creative industries.
