Skills Competition Wales aims to raise the profile of skills in Wales and offers students, trainees, and apprentices in Wales a chance to challenge, benchmark and raise their skills by taking part in competitions across a range of sectors.

Funded by the Welsh Government through the Inspiring Skills Excellence in Wales project the competitions are run by a dedicated network of colleges, work-based learning providers and employer-led organisations. It consists of a series of local skills competitions, aligned to WorldSkills and the needs of the Welsh economy.

This year, 64 competitions will be delivered as part of the Skills Competition Wales portfolio. Sixteen of those will be hosted by UWTSD and the university will welcome 250 students to its state-of-the-art facilities for the events.

Dr Kapilan Radhakrishnan, UWTSD’s Academic Director (Applied Computing) said: “Skills Competitions help develop vocational and employability skills to a word-class standard. We are proud to be working in partnership with Skills Competition Wales and Coleg Sir Gar to host these competitions – recognising some of the best learners, education providers, and trainers across Wales.”

Caroline Thraves, UWTSD’s Academic Director Art and Media added: “We are thrilled to be hosting the Skills Competition Wales finals for Fashion Tech, Visual Merchandising and Photography at Swansea College of Art. The development of high-level skills is fundamental to what we do here at Swansea College of Art. To be able to support so many talented and creative individuals through this competition is an absolute delight.”
