UWTSD’s Swansea College of Art is proud to present Llyf – an unfolding curatorial project exploring photographic process and form.

One of the images on show at the exhibition

The exhibition can be seen at Stiwdio Griffith, at the University’s Dynevor campus in Swansea and will culminate on Thursday, March 21, with an in-conversation event between Folium, Tamsin Green, and Gareth Phillips.

“As a medium, photography resists categorisation and continues to mutate and shape-shift in line with each technological epoch it encounters. On its evolutionary journey, the ability for the medium to ‘speak’ to the past, present and future, remains fundamental to its understanding.

“Our contemporary experience of the flow of images often feels like an eternal present, stripped of any relationship to the past or future.  The conceptual starting point for this exhibition was to reflect upon photography as a medium that enables us to see what often goes unnoticed, by focusing on its unique relationship to history, personal and collective memory, technology, materiality, and place.”

Working with three international artists/ collectives, Gareth Phillips, Folium & Tamsin Green over the course of a month-long period llyf- is a curatorial process that unfolds over time through conversation between the Photography Department staff at Swansea College of Art and the exhibiting artists. These conversations have reflected upon the multifaceted forms in which photography takes and highlights the site-specific nature of responding to the history of the site of display; Stiwdio Griffith as a former library and vessel of knowledge.

Though each artist’s work addresses a different conceptual context, they are brought together through a desire to challenge the mediums parameters, to question its ‘edges’ and push it towards new representational horizons.

In llyf- meaning is shaped by the multiple contexts in which an artwork materialises, through bookmaking, traditional and experimental print, video, sculpture, and installation.

UWTSD is ranked first in Wales for Photography and 4th in the UK in the Guardian League Table 2024.
