Race to Market is a great opportunity for you to gain real practical experience working with successful business people to learn and develop skills, and explore business ideas.
Do I need to bring a business idea?
Not necessarily. You can either come with your own business idea or work on a real-life brief set by our business mentors who you will work with throughout the week.
With the support of mentors you can;
- Develop your own existing idea(s)
- Develop your own existing idea(s) but with the support of other students
- Support a company with their idea(s), or
- Support other students who have existing ideas
Why should I get involved?
During the week you will;
- Develop networks
- Interact with business mentors
- Explore business ideas
- Experience multi-disciplinary working with students from across UWTSD
- Build your confidence
You’ll also learn and develop essential entrepreneurial skills and be given the opportunity to pitch your ideas at the end of the week to judges from industry.

Ian Edwards is the Chief Executive for the Celtic Manor Resort a world renowned golf, leisure and business destination and one of Wales’ flagship tourism properties. Ian has worked in the Tourism Industry for over 25 years, having worked in hotels and conference centres across the UK including the Mercure chain of hotels and spa.
Jason Taylor is the Operations Director for Kier Construction, Wales. Kier offer a comprehensive construction service to public and private sector clients throughout Wales. Jason has worked for the company since 1989, starting as a management trainee and progressing to Operation Director. Jason is also the Vice Chair of FBE Cambria Branch and a Board Member of the CIOB Wales Hub.
Kieran Abbott co-founded Big Lemon Creative, and the company develops powerful brands and creates unique websites for clients. Their passion lies in the design, development and implementation of all the work with a focus on client satisfaction.
With a background of label printing, marketing and large format print, Liz set up Mad Apple in 2006 to provide creative solutions for businesses of all different shapes and sizes. Covering all aspects of graphic design from brochures, large format banners, digital banners, signage, logos, animation, etc, the list is fairly extensive! With a range clients from corporate businesses to independent small companies, all over the UK.
Liz was a mentor last year and is excited to come back and see what this years’ students can produce.
Helena works in brand marketing for Nike and specialises in how Nike’s brand is seen and positioned in retail, within stores and online, by working with designers, innovators and influencers.
Helena has a varied background having worked on projects across fashion, on music videos, branding and has even run an independent cafe and pop up parties.
Helena is keen to work with students to share her knowledge and experience.
Rebecca is a director of sGRipt, a media training and video production company. Rebecca started her career as a presenter on a magazine style programme for S4C and has since worked for BBC Wales News in 1998. In addition to reporting for TV and Radio, Rebecca has hosted live radio programmes, and has also worked as a Life Design tutor at UWTSD.
thunderhat.eu is a cooperative of agents that work together to produce awesome and unique Digital Multimedia products. Things like Event Apps for mobile phones, website CMS (content management systems) for music production businesses, Print and Web Graphic Design – as we’ll as our mainstay Audio Visual Content for supporting Artists on stage, during their performances.
We use cutting edge technologies; with hardware and software, where we have deep skills. Also we pioneer the use of new technology paradigms – like Blockchain and Liminal Content – all within the field of our specialist… Music Event Content Production.
